SURGICAL SERVICE

Our team of Medical Officers provide surgical services until our General Surgeon returns to work when HSTP approves.

They do operations such as CS, excision, appendectomy, surgical intensive care, etc. Each patient is admitted under the care of an able and cooperative team.

Our General Surgeon, being the only Specialist we had under Health Pooled Fund for so many years, he used to carry out CS, laparotomy surgery, endocrinology surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, etc.

We are in discussion with HSTP Team about hiring consultants to work at our facility.

The absence of the General Surgeon has already led to a disheartening increase in mortality of trauma and other surgical emergency patients.

The community palpably feels the absence of the General Surgeon and they are anxiously waiting for him to be brought back.

In late July 2024, a woman with intestines hanging out of her abdomen had to be flown to Juba by Red Cross for surgery. She had sustained injury in Tonj East crisis.

The amount of money spent on ambulance fuel to drive to Wau from Ngapagok PHCC through Tonj Civil Hospital plus the money spent on flight to Juba cannot be compared to a peanut amount that would have been spent if our General Surgeon was here.

In early July 2024, 2 weeks after the surgeon had left, a 10-years-old male child who presented to our hospital with intestinal obstruction was urgently referred to Wau as he required emergency operation-laparotomy.

After 2-hours drive from Tonj Town to Wau, on arrival in Wau Teaching Hospital, the child passed on due to delay to be attended to surgically.

The child's corpse was brought back to Tonj Town. Upon seeing the lifeless body of the child, his maternal uncle took a gun and tried to shoot his head.

The father of the child intercepted but the bullet lodged in the father's head. The maternal uncle proceeded to shoot his own head. In one family, in a single day, 3 people died!

If only the General Surgeon was around, an intestinal obstruction would have not killed those 3 beloved human beings. May their soul rest in peace.

We look forward for 2 specialists to be brought to Tonj Civil Hospital—General Surgeon and Gynecologist.

Challenges

  • Major Theater. Our operation room needs a critical support. The anesthesia machine, surgical lamp and operation table are in poor condition.

When AMREF sent a biomedical engineer to assess the anesthesia machine, she recommended that the hospital should buy a new one.

We are also in need a pediatrics oxygen mask. The surgical instrument have become too old and we need new ones.

  • Infrastructure. The ceiling in the surgical building needs to demolish and a new one to be fixed.

The current one is cracked and is about to fall. In male ward, where the ceiling condition is worse, we have evacuated the patients to sleep in a veranda and locked the door.
