Mental Health

Mental Health Department is an integral part of Tonj Civil Hospital. It has been functioning at the hospital but due to lack of funding its performance and impact was low. Fortunately, this changed when AMREF, Caritas International Organization and BBC Media Action decided to cooperate and fund Mental Health Department. It has a clinic where medications are given to mental health victims.

Across the Greater Tonj region, there are counsellors in PHCUs to carry out counselling. At these PHCUs, staff also assess patients and refer to TCH patients with more serious mental disorders for management. BBC Media Action is responsible for carrying our awareness about Mental Health in South Sudan through radio stations and other platforms.

TCH, under the new leadership of Dr Wol Wol Dut, is working hard to mobilize resources from the government, NGOs and other friends of South Sudan to establish a rehabilitation center. Our community is marred with mental health disorders and alcoholics who resorted to drinking due to inability to handle life stress.
